Sales is, to say the least, a challenging career. When we were asked as children what we wanted to be when we grew up, I would guess that none of us answered “Sales Professional!” It makes sense. Most of us are conditioned from a young age to associate sales people with liars, cheats and swindlers. And let’s face it. Most of us got into sales by default. It was not our first job choice. It may have been the only one we could get.

This was pretty much my scenario. I got into sales to make a “career change”. I knew I was an effective communicator, but had no idea the skill level required to be really successful in this field. I struggled for several years with hit and miss success. When someone would ask me what I did for a living, I would sheepishly reply “Sales”.

My consistent success and continual growth in income (another reason we all get into sales…that will be another post for another day) came only after a pivotal moment in my career. That moment was when I firmly decided something in my mind once and for all. That was this; Sales is the career I want to be in! I love this field and am committed to succeeding in it. I will no longer look for a way out of sales, but turn myself into a Professional. Tops in my field. From the day I made this decision, my life (both personally and professionally) changed for the better.

Have you made this decision? Are you still, in the back of your mind, looking for the “job” that will get you out of sales? If this is still your mind set, you will continue to be a mediocre success. Sure, you might have flashes of brilliance, but as soon as the going gets tough, and believe me in sales it will, you will be looking for that “out” again.

Make the decision and make it today. That decision may very well be to get out of sales. That’s fine. At least you have made a decision and set a firm course for your future. If that decision is to make Sales your career and to become a Professional, be prepared to work. Also, be prepared to be rewarded!
