Attitude is an amazing thing. It is like the steering wheel of our lives. We can turn it, therefore controling where we go. Our desination. The title of this article is the first of ten “Commandments of Attitude”. I received this list in a training class about three months ago. It floored me. I had never seen such a concise and comprehensive list about attitude. Here is the list:
1. It is attitude, not aptitude that governs success.
2. The purpose of existence is not to make a living, but to make a life.
3. A negative thought is the first step to failure.
4. You will seldom experience regret for anything you have done. It is what you do not do that will torment you.
5. Complaining is the refuge of those who have no self-reliance.
6. The ultimate cost of something is that amount of life that you will exchange for it.
7. Anything the mind of a man or woman can conceive and believe, he or she can achieve.
8. A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.
9. The worst bankruptcy is the person who has lost enthusiasm.
10. Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.
This article is the first of 10 that I will write. Each one delving into the statement or commandment.
“It’s attidue, not appitidude that governs succes”. This could not be more true. We all know stories of induviduals that have achieved great things with little or no formal schooling. How did they do it? It was their attitude. They had not doubts in their minds that what there were trying to accomplish, they would accomplish. Knowledge is good, but it can also be a hinderence as well. Sometimes we know so much that we paralize our selves. We live in an information age and more often than naught, we are inandated with information. More than we ever really need. It can immobileize us. Don’t fall victim to this. And don’t get caught up in the trap that “I don’t know enough about this subject to make an impact”. Be passionate about what your are doing. Passion makes up of a lot of knowledge. Passion can overcome the largest obstacles and help you reach the furthest of destinations.
I don’t have a college degree, but I have accomplished many great things in my life and know that I am just begining to realize my potential. I have come to understand that how I perceive a challenge has more bearing on wether I will overcome it rather than the size or complexity of the challenge itself. My focus is not on the challenge, but on the outcome. This is the secret. If you focus on the challange, it can overwhelm you. If you focus on the outcome, you will overcome whatever the challange is to reach that outcome. Do you need knowledge? Of course. But don’t let the pursuit of knowledge about the challenge become the outcome. The “outcome” is the completion of the challange.
The amazing thing is that attitude is the one part of a challenge that we have 100% control of. You can set your thoughts to success or failure. It is all up to you. This is where visualization can play a huge part in your success.
How do you “see” the outcome of a challenge? Do you see the final outcome as successful? If not, you must. This is another key to your success in anything. Picture in your mind your successful outcome. Picture it EXACTLY as you want it to be. Nothing less. The Law of Attraction states that you will attract to you what you focus on. Focus on a picture that is anything less than what you want to acheive and that is exactly what you will get. Focus on the outcome in its best form, and that is what you will achieve.
What is attitude, exactly? Good question. It is your overall perception of a situation. How you perceive it and how you see it’s resolution or outcome. Again, it’s up to you how this looks to you, good or bad. My suggestion, make it good!

1. An exceptional mindset (attitude, thinking, reaction) is an option for all of us. We can find the good or we can inhabit the bad (as many do). We can be the solution person or the problem person. We can be proactive or reactive. We can be the light in the darkness or the darkness in the light. And we can be the victor or the victim. For most of us our mind is our reality, so we best take charge of it. Good or bad, hard or easy, terrifying or exciting is determined by us and us alone.
2. With a better mindset comes better decisions. The ones that many would avoid. The uncomfortable but necessary decisions. The logical and not the emotional.
3. With better decisions comes better behaviours and habits. Put simply, we do better. Always a good thing.
4. And with better habits and behaviours comes better results. What we want. Of course.
Everything in life begins with how you think about it. Your thoughts are what power your actions and thus dictate your results. If you think about somthing in a positive manner and see what you want to see you will step forwards towards your goals.
If however you are “in two minds” you will step forwards one moment and back the next. Your mind needs to be powerfully focused upon what you want. Whenever indecision or fears creep in it is important to know how to banish them and override them; this is where visualization can be such a handy tool - as you really, really picture what you want to happen those other distractions are effectively squashed.
Gary, I could not agree more. Attitude is a driving force. Attitude definitely governs our beliefs, our expectations and our performance.
